Butterfly Festival 2010

Butterfly Festival

Saturday, February 27th the weather did not look promising for what was to be an exciting afternoon dinner, along with an outdoor evening for our members. We do look forward once a year to join our members at the ANNUAL BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL in Coral Springs after enjoying a great dining experience at La Bamba Restaurant. This year we thought we would only be sharing the dinner because of the days’ rain and overcast clouds. Only 21 of the 27 members braved the stormy clouds and intermittent rain to show up for our dinner.

We were given our own room at La Bamba Restaurant along with excellent service. Large portions and tasty dishes were just what we needed to chase away the gloomy weather forecast. Each person seemed to be doing a lot of praising their food selection, and once again with excellent service, dinner was a great success. Each year I can’t recall why we don’t return for more dinners at La Bamba. Food, service, and pricing are a winning combination. Hopefully we’ll return in the near future.

Meal over, weather still doubtful, many members decided to call it an evening and go indoors to be nice, safe, and dry. Seven members checked the sky above the Fairground location and found it to be promising clear. What the heck, we were never disappointed before, and we hoped to keep our perfect record.

Parking at the school grounds to catch the bus for the festival we practically had the bus to ourselves, and after arriving at the festival grounds, we almost had the grounds to ourselves also. There were handfuls of children enjoying the various rides and attractions on the grounds. All of the tents that were to be selling local fare were closed down. We had the grounds almost to ourselves. It was sad. What normally boasted a few thousand people enjoying the fair was now reduced to maybe only one hundred brave soles. We could have been in the front row to watch the show, but instead settled for the third row. The performers came on and delivered a show worthy of the thousands of people who would have normally been there. They held nothing back and sang and played their hearts out. It looked like they were enjoying themselves performing as much as we enjoyed watching them.

The only disappointment of the evening was the cancellation of the firework display. Although the weather cleared at the time of the show, the decision to cancel the fireworks needed to be made earlier in the afternoon. It leaves something to look forward to next year.

What would the evening be if we didn’t go for dessert after the show? We headed for a Starbucks coffee shop at a nearby outdoor mall, where we sat and shared stories for another hour. I think the moral of the evenings event, is that it really doesn’t matter what we do, or who is sharing the event with us, as long as members get together.
